Letters From Guatemala

We received some wonderful letters from Alicia and Maria in Guatemala, who are both doing well and enjoying school. They were both very serious about answering their mid-term questions from us, and we have translated their letters for you here. We hope you enjoy them!

Letter From Klaudina

Klaudina wrote us a letter recently that is wonderful. It was written just as is, in English, so there is no need for us to translate! Remember, this young lady spoke no English just a few years ago, and we are so proud of her, and so happy we could help her be able to communicate in a new language. It’s clear she loves school and has many ideas about her future, which is very exciting to see. Her letter is terrific, we hope you enjoy it!

Very Good News From Nepal!

In the midst of the horrific news of the earthquake in Nepal, we have heard that our girls are fine, as is our contact, Subash. Christa wrote to him as soon as she heard, and here is his response:

Yes Christa Ma,am we all are fine. I can’t get in contact with the girls family because still the mobile networks has not functioned well. But I heard that everyone are safe. I am engaged in a social club and our club are helping the victim of massive earthquake by providing food. So me and my team are totally engaged in that activities so I couldn’t send you the response fast. School will remain closed for few days so I will send the report of the girls and the yearly expenses report as soon as the school opens and as soon as I can. Warmly, Subash Shrestha

Something a Little Different

When I travel to other countries to visit the girls, I am always reminded of how much I “have”—in money, in possessions, in freedoms and in privileges. Although I am not wealthy by the standards of the United States or some other western countries, I have always known that I was still one of the wealthy ones, globally speaking.

A friend recently sent me this posting from a site called Becoming Minimalist

It says so graciously and clearly what I have always felt in my travels, and in meeting the girls who receive our scholarships.

I thought you might enjoy it.

All the best to all of you, Christa

Meet Husna

We have welcomed another girl to our family, and we’re very excited. You can read all about her on her page, but her name is Husna (pronounced “oosna”) Kidumo Romadhani, and she’s in her third year of secondary school. She comes from a Muslim family, and both her parents really support her education, which is rare in Tanzania. Her dad has even gone to the point of selling household items and borrowing money to make sure she can attend school.
